Sally is a full-time wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, who primarily uses her left hand when working, and preparing food and drinks.  She lives with her mum, dad, and grandmother and has a full-time personal assistant/carer to help with everyday tasks around the home, although Sally is able to use some accessible features such as the kitchen area.

Sally can weight bear but not stand, and leads an active life. She plays wheelchair football for ASPIRE, which is a club for people of varying ages. The team have won several trophies, including the European club championships in Paris.  Sally has been playing wheelchair football since the age of 12. She really enjoys sport, and has a teaching qualification to help children with special needs integrate into the local community. She has also enjoyed riding, through the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).

Sally’s Occupational Therapist recommended she speak to Adam Thomas, the UK's leading expert in accessible kitchen design. Adam worked closely with Sally and her family to design a kitchen tailored to their requirements, and recommended a nearby Freedom by Symphony kitchen retailer, Tara Neil Limited, who assisted with Freedom by Symphony furniture selection, and supplied and installed the appliances, accessories, and worktops.

The family chose Urban Indigo and Pebble Freedom by Symphony furniture; which come together to create a classic modern colour scheme.  Sally also made other choices, such as App Control systems to operate lighting, doors and window blinds.

Tall units are visible to rear wall on back left, with integrated Neff ovens. A large piece of glass wall art in blues and greens is visible to the top right of the image.

Kitchen features:

Freedom Adjustable Height Straight Run Worktop

This incorporates breakfast bar seating allowing Sally, the family, and her carer to socialise during meal preparation.  The adjustable height worktop is fully accessible for Sally, and houses the hob and shallow bowl sink, which is ideal for food preparation and hand washing. Waterfell edging are an important safety feature, ensuring that water spills are contained on the worktop and do not fall onto Sally's lap.

Freedom Accessible Tailored Depth Sink & Tap

This is the main washing up sink, which has been tailored to the precise depth required by Sally when seated in her wheelchair. The front mounted tap also allows her to control the water supply using the lever situated to Sally's left.

NEFF Slide & Hide Oven with Heatproof Shelves

The slide and hide oven is designed to create safer transfer of hot dishes in and out of the oven.  Neff ovens can also be specified with fixed telescopic runners to prevent spills and fully support the oven shelves. Sally uses a heatproof pull-out shelf, located below the oven, which is an immediate safe resting place for hot dishes. Hot items can then be transferred to the worktop which is adjacent at ninety degrees. The nearby worktop can be adjusted to the best height for transferring safely and sliding, if needed, to the food prep area.

Freedom iMove Pull Down Baskets / Pull Out Drawers

The iMove pull down basket mechanism is fitted inside wall cupboards, and can be accessed via an extended handle, allowing Sally to access food storage more easily. Pull out drawers below the ovens provide plenty of accessible storage.
